Why choose a loft conversion?

Loft conversions are popular because they are so versatile. Most homes already have a loft space that they are not utilising, which could be used to create an extra room in the home that works as a bedroom, office, or hobby room, or even to provide additional storage space. This is a great option for those who have a small plot of land to work with and can’t extend outwards or don’t wish to lose some of their garden area.

There are many ways to carry out a loft conversion depending on your goals. We will work with you to understand your requirements so we can decide on the best design option.

Is a loft conversion right for your home?

Like any home improvement, a loft conversion is a big investment and should be carefully considered. First, you want to ensure that you have enough headroom in your loft – we generally recommend a minimum central ceiling height of 2.2 metres.

Also, consider the location of your loft. What is directly beneath it and where will the stairs go? Is there enough room for access to be created safely? Spiral staircases can be a potential solution if there is limited space.

If you’re unsure if a loft conversion is right for your home, our experts will be happy to give you advice and talk you through your options to help you find the ideal solution.

Types of loft conversions

Roof light

These are simpler and cheaper to install compared to other types of loft conversions. This is because windows are installed parallel to the pitch of your roof, meaning no structural changes are required. As such, planning permission is usually not needed.

Dormer

These are box-like structures that protrude from the roof. They add more structural detail to your home, which means they are likely to require planning permission. They can be very spacious and the vertical walls also give you the option to add a Juliet balcony.

Hip to Gable

These are specifically designed for properties with hip roofs. These have no vertical sides, meaning they can look more attractive externally and are a good option if you don’t want to extend outwards.
